NO TIME LIKE WINTER TIME
By: Bryan Matthews

For most of us bow hunters winter can cause us to put our bows up on the rack until spring.  But the
truth is this is a perfect time of the year to keep on shooting.

Now is the time to put your cold weather gear on and shoot away. A lot of us have cold weather gear
we very rarely wear during the bow hunting season. Put your heaviest coat on and see what happens.
You may find that you need a different arm guard to hold the bulk of the sleeve down.  If you need to
find a new arm guard pick one that will work with your early and late season hunting clothes.

Pay close attention to the collars of your jacket; they too can sometimes get in the way of your bow
string at full draw. If the collar is getting in the way you will have to tuck it under itself, or find some
other method that will keep it out of the way during the shot.

With all your cold weather gear on don’t forget to put your safety harness on. See how it fits, you
should have enough adjustment to make it fit right. If it won’t adjust out enough to fit you right get one
that will. Remember that tree stand safety comes first, even in cold weather. Also check for any straps,
buckles or pocket flaps that could get in the way of bow string at full draw. If possible have a hunting
buddy look at you while at full draw. A second set of eyes may find things that are getting in the way
that you have missed.

If you were thinking of changing to a different release during last fall’s deer season there is no time
like the present. You have about four months before turkey and bear seasons open up, plenty of time
to work out all the bugs. The same goes for any accessory such as arrows, broad heads, sights, rests,
quivers and so on. Try them now and save yourself a lot of time this spring.

There’s no time like winter time to shoot your bow. So don’t get the winter time blues, gear up and
head outside. Spring will be here before you know it.
